Bushfires, heatwaves and storms are a significant part of the summer we face as Australians. For our nation, preparing for the hot weather can mean more than just blowing up the pool toys and dusting off the barbecue.
With many of our garage doors relying on electricity to operate, a blackout caused by a serious weather event can lead to more than just a moment of inconvenience, but a potentially dangerous situation.
By having a five-minute conversation with your household, you can rest assured that your family is best prepared for the summer ahead, allowing you to safely enter and exit through the garage – no matter the weather conditions.
Prepare your garage for a blackout in three easy steps
Sometimes the safest thing you can do in the event of an emergency is leave, and exiting through your garage may be the safest option.
Streamline your exit and make sure that each able member of your family knows how to manually exit the garage.
See our three simple steps to prepare your garage in the event of a power-outage:
1. Know how to work your garage release cord in a blackout
All Merlin garage door openers are designed to be smart and safe and are fitted with a manual release cord. This is carefully designed to be used in the event of a power outage.
Be prepared at any time by regularly checking that the cord is in working order, and following the steps of operation below:
- Pull the red cord down firmly once to manually release the door’s locking mechanism-the opener will make a clicking noise.
- Walk over to the door to push it up manually. Do not try to pull the door using the manual release cord; it will snap under the load.
- Take care when operating the manual release when the door is open, as it may fall rapidly due to weak or broken springs.
- When power returns, or it is safe to do so, re-engage the opener by pulling the red release cord down firmly.
2. Have a backup battery for your garage door opener
Having one back-up plan is good but having two is even better! Take the worry away by installing a back-up battery. This will allow your garage to open automatically, even if power is disconnected.
For Merlin compatible doors, the Backup Battery 24V will continue to power the garage door opener and (safety features) in the event of a blackout.
Fitted with audible signal sounds and LED lights, this battery is designed to communicate when it is in use and when the battery is low.
3. Ensure your driveway is clear
Keeping your driveway clear on any occasion is a good idea to avoid accidents. This is even more so during bushfire and storm season. Keeping your driveway clear will ensure time is saved if a swift exit or entry is needed.
Time spent planning is time saved in action – taking just five minutes to chat through these three easy steps can keep your family safe. Merlin’s products are designed with your security and safety at the forefront, ensuring you and your garage can weather any storm.
